Wednesday, March 27,2002 BY PH!L LANGE Recently volunteers from the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity took another step in the construction of their new 1000 square foot warehouse/sales facility. The warehouse materials, do nated specifically for this project by Simon and Nancy Rich, were off-loaded in an afternoon by eight enthusias tic volunteers. OUTLAND StalfWriter The Edenton Police Depart ment has been busy in the last few weeks responding to num ber of calls reporting shots fired in the areas of Oakum and Albemarle streets. Two of those .calls have resulted in one shoot ing victim and another has re sulted in damage to property. On March 10 police re sponded to a call near the in tersection of Oakum and East Albemarle. Upon arrival Offic ers Denise Wilder and Brian Ferraraccio were informed by Leroy Leary, age 31, of 4108 Walker Dr. in Edenton that he and his cousin were riding through the area when their vehicle was fired on. They iden tified their two assailants as 17 year-old Skyiar Holley, and Jatnile Boyce, age 19, of 200 Vance Lane in Edenton. Leary's vehicle sustained dam age to the right front. On March 13th police arrested Jamlle Boyce and charged him with Assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. He* was placed under a $2,000 bond by the magistrate on duty. Holley had yet to be apprehended. In an unrelated case on Mon day. March 18 at 11:50 p.m. po lice responded to a report of a gun shot victim that had been transported to Chowan Hospi tal by a friend. Upon arrival Edenton police found Skyiar Lavelle Holley with a wound to the right side of his chest. "Based on the information we have been able to obtain so far this incident appears to be acci dental," says Chowan County SherifTFred Spruill, "...caused by the mishandling oi firearm that the victims were not familiar with." Deputies went to2823 Virginia Road, the business location of Patterson and Webb, at 6:54 a.m., Saturday. March 23 in response to a call to Chowan County 911 Communications reporting two men with gunshot wounds. U pon arrival deputies located the vic tims with what appeared to be gunshot wounds. The victims were transported toChowan Hos pital by the Chowan County Res cue Squad and treated for their injuries. Adrian Ramirez Arano age 24 of Greenville, NC and Gustavo C. Crespo, ages 33, of Coierain, NC were both injured when the gun. a Coit .380 automatic pistol, tired. According to the victims, Arano ha< i brought the pistoi wi th him to work and was showing it to Crespo. While Crespo was looking at the pistdi he reportedly asked Arano if the gun was loaded. Arano toidCrespothathe thought it was unloaded since the maga zine was not in the gun. Crespo pulled the trigger and the gun tired hitting Crespo in the left hand and Arano in the right hip. OUTLAND Sfc# Writer Special Projects Director for Chowan County, Peter Rascoe. has announced he is leaving his position with the county and will be going to work with Eastern North Carolina Natu ral Gas. Eastern NCNG is a partnership of Progress En ergy and the Albemarle Pamlico Economic Develop ment Commission. Rascoe said it was a decision not made lightly. "The job as Special Projects Director has been a dream job," said Rascoe. "Not only did I have the two greatest bosses in the world (Chowan County Manager, Cliif Copeland and Edenton Town Manager, Anne Marie Knighton), but I got up every morning anxious to get started." Rascoe, a Bertie native, came to Edenton in 1996 after graduating from the Univer sity of South Carolina School of Law. During his time here, Rascoe has worked for Preser vation North Carolina as Northeast Regional Director, Peter Rascoe saiutes the Hag during the Providence marker ceremony, which he heiped organize. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the Edenton See RASCOE On Page 12-A Cluli names Ervin Woman of the Year BY REBECCA BUNCH Edtfor Former Health Department nurse and breast cancer survi vor Louise McPherson Ervin has been named Woman of the Year by the Edenton Business and Professional Women (BPW) Club. Introduced by BPW Presi dent Marina Crummey, Ervin appeared shocked to have been chosen. "This is my home, and I love you all," she said. "Thank you so much." Ervin, a Camden, NC native, first attended nursing school in 1959 at Vanderbilt in Nash ville, TN. attaining her LPN (licensed practical nurse) cer tification. After moving to Edenton in the early 1970s. she began working as an operating room nurse at Chowan Hospi tal. While finishing the Associ ate Degree Nursing (ADN) pro gram in 1977 at College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, she also kept up a home and cared for her mother, who had suffered a stroke and was in a nursing home. She visited her mother daily, and took care of her other family responsibili ties, and still managed togradu ate with honors. OUTLAND Sfa# Wrtfer E-champion for Chowan County's North Carolina Ru ral Internet Authority, Bill Miller, and Albemarle Learn ing Center Executive Director, Jake Boyce convened a joint meeting of their boards last week. The purpose of the meet ing was to discuss a possible cooperative effort by both fac tions to designate the learning center as a central location for Internet service for Chowan County, a move that would ben efit both. According to Boyce and Miller, the learning center and E-NC have a common goal to educate and bring to also bring every citizen in the county into the twenty-first century of com puter technology. The Albemarle Learning Center has served Chowan County for over ten years as the hub of agriculture and natu ral history education by work ing, hand in hand with area Jake Boyce (center) )eads a tour of the A!bemar!e Learning Center during the joint meeting, schools, 4-H, and Tourism. E NC, the new kid on the block, is part of a statewide initiative to bring the rural communities access and education resources available through the Internet. By partnering with the cen ter E-NC and the center can combine their assets to serve a dual purpose. "Together, 1 think we can put together a community ac cess center, a county web por tal, we can provide staff fund ing. and a demonstration project for high-speed internet," says Bili Milier.
